How to earn citations from the sources AI trusts

Citations are the currency of AI answers. Here's how to find the right ones and actually earn them.

Find the sources that decide your category

Every category has a short list of sites AI leans on — a few review platforms, a comparison publisher, an active community, maybe a directory. Identify them by looking at what the engines actually cite in your buying-question answers, not at generic "high DR" lists.

See which already work for a competitor

The most actionable citations are the ones vouching for a rival but silent on you. Those sources already carry weight with the engines in your space — getting represented there closes a specific, visible gap rather than chasing authority in the abstract.

Earn the placement, don't fake it

Real citations come from real presence: an accurate listing, a genuine review, a substantive comparison, a helpful community answer. Contrived link-building tends not to survive how modern engines weigh trust — and it's not the reputation you want an assistant repeating.

The three kinds, and what each costs

Most categories run on three types of source, and they are earned very differently. Listing and review platforms want a complete, accurate profile and genuine customer reviews — slow, largely administrative, and the most reliably achievable. Comparison and editorial publishers want a reason to write, which usually means a genuine point of difference and a relationship with a writer. Communities cannot be earned at all in the marketing sense; you can only be useful in them, repeatedly, under your own name. Budget accordingly: the first is work, the second is relationships, the third is time.

What does not work

Bought links on sites nobody reads, syndicated press releases, and pages written to be crawled rather than read. Beyond the ethics, these fail on their own terms: the engines lean on sources that other credible sources also reference, and a purchased mention sits in a neighbourhood with none. The tell is simple — if a human researching your category would never open the page, an answer engine has little reason to weight it.

How long it takes

Longer than a content calendar suggests. A corrected listing can register in days on the engines that search live. A new review profile with real reviews behind it is a matter of months. An editorial mention lands when the publisher decides, not when you do. Anyone promising a fixed timeline for third-party citations is describing something they do not control, and the honest plan assumes several months before the slower sources move at all.

Measure whether it moved the answer

A citation only matters if it changes what the engine says. After you earn one, re-run the affected questions and check whether your mention or recommendation rate actually improved — and check it against the margin, not against the raw number, so a change inside the noise is not mistaken for a result. The before-and-after is the proof, and it is also the only reliable way to learn which sources in your category are worth pursuing next.
